解説 Definition
一人の話し手が、王族の「we」や社説・学術文体のように複数形 we を単数的に用いるときの再帰・強調形。現代英語では非常にまれで、普通の複数の主語には ourselves を使うため、用法の限定された語である。
Ourself is a reflexive form of we, but it is very uncommon in modern everyday English. It is mainly used by a royal person, in very formal writing, or in older styles to mean the speaker and no one else in that group.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
myself / yourself / ourselves の並びで覚えると位置づけがつかみやすい語です。形は our + self なので、発想としては「we を1人扱いしたときの self」。ただし普通の複数の we なら必ず ourselves を使い、ourself は王族の royal we、社説、硬い学術文体などで「1人なのに we と言う」特殊場面にほぼ限られます。見たら「文法ミスではなく、単数扱いの格式ばった we だ」と判断すると記憶に残ります。
Remember the family: `myself`, `yourself`, `ourselves`. `ourself` looks strange because it is `our + self`, not `selves`, so it usually appears only when `we` refers to one person in a formal style, such as a royal or editorial voice. If you see it, think: this is a special singular `we`, not a grammar mistake.

ourself は中英語 oure-selfe にさかのぼり、our「私たちの」+ self「自己」から成る語です。語源的には「私たちのその身」で、そこから再帰的に「私たち自身」を表します。関連語は myself, yourself です。
Ourself goes back to Middle English oure-selfe and is made from our and self. Its original sense was literally "our own self," which then developed into a reflexive form meaning "ourselves" in certain uses. It belongs to the same pattern as myself and yourself.
