An outcropping is a part of rock that appears above the ground or the surface of the earth. It is commonly used in geography and geology to describe natural rock formations. The word can also refer more generally to something that rises out visibly from a larger area.

outcropping は out-「外へ」+ crop「先端・突き出るもの」+ -ing で、crop は古英語系の語です。岩が外へむくっと突き出す姿がそのまま『露頭』で、crop や upcrop に同じ芯が見えます。
Outcropping is formed from out, crop, and -ing. Crop here comes from an old English word with the sense of a tip, top, or something sticking out. The image is of rock pushing outward from the ground surface. From that, the word developed into a noun for exposed rock that appears above the surrounding ground.
