解説 Definition

outsiders は outsider(部外者、外部の人)の複数形です。ある集団、組織、地域などに属していない人たちを指し、文脈によって少し距離のある言い方になることがあります。

Outsiders are people who do not belong to a particular group, organization, community, or place. Members may therefore regard them as unfamiliar, uninformed, or separate from the group.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

単数形 outsider に複数語尾 -s を付けた形で、発音は /ˌaʊtˈsaɪdərz/ と語末が /z/ になります。out + side + -er を「外側にいる人」と分けると、集団・組織・地域に属さない複数の人々だと理解できます。share information with outsiders や outsiders cannot enter の場面で覚えましょう。

Start with outsider, built transparently from outside plus the person-forming ending -er: an outsider is someone on the outside of a group. Add -s for more than one person; the final sound is /z/, as in /ˌaʊtˈsaɪdərz/. Picture a private office, close community, or local village distinguishing its own members from outsiders. Useful patterns include keep outsiders away, share information with outsiders, and seem strange to outsiders. The word can sound distancing, because it emphasizes a boundary between “us” and “them.”

例文

Outsiders cannot enter this office without a pass.

部外者は通行証なしでこの事務所に入れません。

The team did not share the report with outsiders.

そのチームは部外者と報告書を共有しませんでした。

outsiders の語源・成り立ち Etymology

out(外)+ side(側)+ -er(人)から成る複合語。古英語 ūt(外へ)と sīde(側面)に由来。insider(内部者)と対をなす。「外側にいる人」→「部外者」という直感的な成り立ちで、集団の境界を意識した表現。

Outsiders is the plural of outsider. Outsider was formed in English from outside and the agentive or personal suffix -er, literally indicating a person situated on the outside. Outside itself combines out, from Old English ūt, with side, from Old English sīde. The social meaning developed naturally from physical position: someone beyond a group’s boundary came to mean a nonmember or stranger to that group.
