覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Start with the familiar phrase "soy milk" and picture the beans being made into milk, oil, and protein ingredients. Use soy for the crop or ingredient in general, and soybean when thinking of an individual bean.

soy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
soy は17世紀にオランダ語 soya を経て入った語で、さらに日本語「醤油」へ、元は中国語の豉油にさかのぼります。豉は発酵大豆、油は液体を表し、もとは“豆のたれ”の名だったので、soybean・soy sauce に広がったとわかります。
The word entered English through Dutch soya, from Japanese shōyu, meaning a sauce made from fermented beans.
