解説 Definition

overreacting は overreact(過剰反応する)の現在分詞・動名詞です。出来事に対して、状況に見合わないほど強く怒ったり、恐れたり、興奮したり、心配したりすることを表します。

Overreacting is responding to an event or problem with more anger, fear, excitement, or concern than the situation reasonably calls for. It is the present participle or gerund form of overreact and often suggests that the response is disproportionate.

使い方 Usage

  • be overreacting to ... は「…に過剰反応している」。反応の原因を to の後に置きます。 Be overreacting to something describes an excessive response in progress. Place the cause of the response after to.
  • 相手に You are overreacting と言うと、反応を批判したり、心配を軽く扱ったりする響きになることがあります。 Telling someone You are overreacting can sound critical of their response or dismissive of their concerns.

使い分け Common distinctions

overreacting の語源・成り立ち Etymology

接頭辞over-(古英語で過度に)と、react(ラテン語re-「再び」+agere「動かす」)が結合。刺激に対し必要以上に再び動くイメージから「過剰反応する」と意味が導かれる。同語根にreaction(反応)やagent(行為者)がある。

Overreacting is the -ing form of overreact, a compound of over- in the sense “excessively” and react. React was formed from Latin-derived elements re-, “back” or “again,” and act, ultimately from Latin agere, “to do” or “drive.” The modern compound overreact means to respond too strongly. Adding -ing produces either a present participle describing an ongoing response or a gerund naming that behavior.
