page はラテン語 pagina「書かれた一面・欄」に由来し、もとは pangere「固定する」と関係する語です。文字を一定の面に並べて固定する発想から、書物の一面を指すようになりました。関連語に paginate「ページ番号をつける」があり、紙面や画面を区切る感覚が残っています。
Page came into English through Old French from Latin pagina, meaning a written sheet, leaf, or column. Pagina is related to the Latin verb pangere, “to fasten or fix,” and may originally have referred to a structured surface or row on which material was fixed in place. The word first named a physical side or leaf of written material. Its use later extended naturally to a distinct unit of information displayed on a website.
