English panda was first used for the animal now called the red panda and was later extended to the giant panda. The word reached English through French, and it is generally connected with a Nepalese name for the red panda, though the exact source form and its literal analysis are uncertain. For that reason, the often repeated interpretation “bamboo eater” should be treated cautiously. Modern unmodified panda most often denotes the giant panda, while red panda retains the older reference.
