解説 Definition
papyrus は、古代エジプトなどで紙のように使われた「パピルス」、またはその材料となる植物を指します。日本語の「パピルス」とほぼ同じですが、英語では植物名としても文書素材としても使われます。
Papyrus is a tall wetland plant formerly abundant around the Nile, or the sheetlike writing material ancient peoples made from its stem. The word can also refer to a document written on that material.

papyrus はギリシャ語 papyros を経てラテン語 papyrus に入った語で、古代エジプトの植物名が西方に伝わったものです。この植物から書写材料が作られたため、paper や paperback も同系で、「紙」と結びつくのが納得できます。
English papyrus came through Latin papyrus from Greek papyros, the name of the plant and the writing material made from it.
