parenchyma はギリシャ語 parenkhyma に由来し、para-「そばに」+ en「中に」+ khein「注ぐ」から成る語です。もとは「脇から注ぎ入れられたもの」で、器官の中身を満たす組織という発想から、生物学で「実質」を意味するようになりました。関連語は enchyma, chyme。
Parenchyma comes from Greek parenkhyma, formed from parts meaning "beside," "in," and "to pour." It originally suggested something poured in to fill a space. From that image, it came to mean the substance that fills out an organ or tissue. Chyme is a related word from the same verbal root.
