His surname ultimately derives from Late Latin paschalis, meaning “of Easter or Passover,” which is related through earlier forms to Hebrew pesach, “Passover.” Thus, a word originally associated with a religious festival became a personal name and surname, and that surname was later adopted as the name of an SI unit.
