Perplexity is a feeling of confusion or difficulty in understanding something. It is used when a situation, statement, or event seems strange, unclear, or hard to explain.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず `complex`「複雑」を足場にすると覚えやすい語です。`perplex` は「複雑すぎて頭がもつれる、困らせる」で、`perplexity` は語尾 `-ity` が付いて「その状態・性質」になった名詞。つまり「複雑で理解や判断が止まる感じ」。`confusion` よりも、何が起きているかは見えているのに整理できず困るニュアンスが出やすいです。`with perplexity`、`in perplexity`、`cause perplexity` の形で触れると定着します。
Link it to `perplex` and also to `complex`. If something is too complex, it can leave you mentally stuck, and that feeling is `perplexity`. It is closer to puzzled difficulty than to simple, general confusion.

perplexityはラテン語 perplexitas に由来し、さらに per-「すっかり」+ plectere「編む・絡める」に分けられます。考えが糸のように絡み合ってほどけない感じから「困惑」となり、perplex や complex も同じ語根です。
Perplexity comes from Latin perplexitas, from a root meaning "to braid" or "entangle" completely. The original image is of thoughts becoming twisted together like threads. From that, the word developed the sense of confusion or mental difficulty. Perplex and complex share the same root.
