A phage is a virus that infects bacteria, using a bacterial cell to reproduce and often destroying the cell in the process. Phages are important in genetics and biotechnology and are investigated as tools for treating bacterial infections.

Phage is an abbreviated form of bacteriophage. The full term was formed in the early twentieth century from bacterium and the Greek-derived element -phage, based on phagein, “to eat.” It was applied to an agent observed destroying bacteria and was popularly interpreted as a “bacteria eater.” Modern biology identifies phages as viruses that infect bacteria rather than organisms that literally consume them. The same Greek root appears in phagocyte and macrophage.
