phonemic は phoneme「音素」に -ic が付いた語で、核の phon- はギリシャ語 phone「音・声」。音素は意味を区別する最小の音なので、phonemic は「意味を分ける音についての」ということ。telephone や symphony にも同じ phon が見える。
