pin は古英語 pinn「留め針・杭」で、さらにラテン語 pinna「羽・とがったもの」に連なり、down は古英語 dūn「下へ」。「ピンで下に留めて動けなくする」が核なので、曖昧な話を逃げられない形まで特定する意味になりました。関連語は pinpoint、safety pin。
