Pliocene was coined from Greek pleion, meaning “more,” and kainos, meaning “new” or “recent.” The ending -cene appears in several names for Cenozoic epochs. The term was introduced within an early classification based partly on the proportion of fossil mollusk species resembling living species, so “more recent” reflected that historical comparison. Related epoch names include Miocene, built with an element meaning “less,” and Pleistocene, built with one meaning “most.”
