pointer の語源・成り立ち Etymology
pointer は point「指し示すもの」+ -er「するもの」から成る語です。point はラテン語 pungere「突く」由来で、もとは「先のとがった点」を指しました。puncture や punctual も同根で、「ポインタ」が一点を突いて示す物だと分かります。
Pointer is built from point and the suffix -er, meaning something that does an action. Point came through French from Latin pungere, meaning "to prick" or "to stab," so its earliest idea was a sharp tip or dot. From that sense of something sharp marking a spot, pointer came to mean something that indicates a place or direction; puncture and punctual share the same root.
