Polarising means causing people to split into strongly different opinions or sides. It is often used for public issues, leaders, or cultural topics that create both strong support and strong opposition.

polarising は polar + -ise/-ize + -ing。polar はギリシャ語 polos「軸・極」がラテン語・フランス語を経て入り、polarity や bipolar も同根。もともと「極に向ける」が、意見や性質を二極へ分けていく意味につながる。
