解説 Definition

An interjection used to indicate that something happens suddenly or as if by magic, especially that it appears or disappears instantly.

Memory Tip

Poof!

Poof often marks something appearing, disappearing, or otherwise happening instantly, as if in a magic trick. Remember the common storytelling pattern “and poof, it was gone.” It can also stand alone as “Poof!” Compare it with puff, which usually names a small burst of air, smoke, or breath. Poof is not an ordinary expression of thoughtful agreement.

例文

And poof, the rabbit was gone.

She waved her wand and—poof!—a dove appeared.

The files were there a moment ago, and then, poof, they disappeared.

Etymology

Poof is an imitative formation whose sound suggests a brief expulsion of air or a soft burst. It is recorded from the nineteenth century and is closely comparable in form and sound symbolism to puff. From representing a small sound, it developed its familiar use for an abrupt disappearance or transformation, particularly in descriptions of magic, comedy, and imaginary events.
