解説 Definition
praying は pray(祈る)の現在分詞・動名詞です。神や大切な存在に願いを伝えたり、誰かの無事や幸せを祈ったりする場面で使います。
Praying means addressing a god or other sacred being in worship, thanks, confession, or a request for help. It is the present participle or gerund form of pray and may describe an ongoing act or the activity itself.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
praying は pray に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、y を残して pray → praying と書き、/ˈpreɪ.ɪŋ/ と発音します。pray for safety「安全を祈る」、pray for a friend「友人のために祈る」のように、pray for+願う対象を典型場面として覚えましょう。
Build praying directly from pray plus -ing. The final y stays, so the spelling is pray → praying, and the pronunciation is /ˈpreɪ.ɪŋ/. Picture someone quietly speaking or thinking toward God in a church, at home, or before a journey. Learn the frequent pattern pray for someone or something: pray for a friend’s recovery, pray for safety, or pray for peace. Praying may be part of a continuous verb phrase, as in She is praying, or act as a gerund naming the activity, as in Praying brought him comfort.

praying の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 precari(懇願する)から古フランス語 preier を経て英語に入った。語根 prec- は「頼む・祈る」の意で、precarious(不安定な=神頼みの)やdeprecate(非難する=祈って避ける)と同根。「神に懇願する」が原義で、そこから広く「祈る」の意味になった。
Pray entered English through Old French preier from Latin precari, meaning “to ask earnestly, entreat, or pray.” Its older core was an earnest request, which survives in religious prayer and in older expressions where pray means “please” or “I ask you.” The Latin family is connected with requests and entreaties. Praying is formed regularly by adding -ing to pray without changing the final y.
