prefecture はフランス語 prefecture を経て、ラテン語 praefectura「長官の職・管区」に由来する。prae-「前に」+ facere「置く・任せる」が核で、prefect も同根。「前に立たせた人が治める区域」から、行政区の意味になった。
Prefecture came into English through French prefecture, from Latin praefectura. It is related to praeficere, meaning "to put in charge," from prae- "before" and facere "to make or do." So the word first referred to the office or authority of a prefect, and then to the area under that authority. Prefect comes from the same root.
