presidium はロシア語 prezidium を経てラテン語 praesidium にさかのぼり、prae-「前に」+ sedere「座る」が核です。会の前に座る人々が幹部会になったわけで、preside や president にも同じ「前に座して導く」感覚が残ります。
Presidium came into English through Russian `prezidium`, from Latin `praesidium`. It is linked to the idea of people sitting in front to lead or guard, from `prae-` "before" and a root related to sitting.
