runic は rune「ルーン」に形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた語で、rune は古英語 rūn、さらに古ノルド語 rún の「秘密・ささやき」にさかのぼります。rune や runestone と並べると、もともと「秘められた印」だった感覚から「ルーン文字の」の意味になったと見えてきます。
