ラテン語 premere（押す）の過去分詞 pressus に由来し、古フランス語 preinte を経て英語 print となった。-ed は過去分詞の接尾辞。press（押す）や imprint（刻印）が同根語。活字を紙に「押しつける」行為が印刷の原義である。
