generate / generation / gene を知っていれば、gen に「生む・世代」の感覚を残すと覚えやすいです。pro- は「前の」。つまり progenitor は「前の世代で、その流れを始めた存在」。ancestor よりやや硬く、単なる先祖というより「家系・種・思想の出発点」という響きがあります。biology や history で a common progenitor（共通祖先）, the progenitor of the modern system（現代制度の起点）のように使われます。predecessor は単なる前任者なので別語です。
