この意味の quack は、オランダ語 kwakzalver に由来する英語 quacksalver の短縮形です。kwakzalver は、声高に宣伝することを表す語と、軟膏を塗る人・扱う人を表す語に関係し、薬の効能を大げさに売り込む者を指しました。そこから「インチキ医者」、さらに「専門知識があるように装う人」という意味になりました。
In this sense, quack is a shortening of English quacksalver, which was borrowed from Dutch kwakzalver. The Dutch term combines elements associated with noisy boasting or promotion and with applying or selling salve. It referred to a person who loudly promoted supposed remedies, and quack consequently came to mean a bogus medical practitioner and, more broadly, a pretender to professional expertise.
