charlatan の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「charlatan」はフランス語経由で、イタリア語 ciarlatano に由来し、ciarl- は「ぺらぺらしゃべる」の意。もとは口先で客を引く薬売りで、話術だけで信用させる人を指した。関連語に charlatanry、伊語 ciarlare がある。
Charlatan came into English through French from Italian ciarlatano. The Italian base ciarl- means "to chatter" or "talk too much." At first it referred to a loud street seller, especially one who talked people into buying fake medicine. From that, it came to mean a person who wins trust by talk rather than real ability.
