reavers の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 rēafian（奪う・略奪する）に由来する reave の行為者形。ゲルマン祖語 *raubōn-（奪う）が語根で、英語 rob（強奪する）やドイツ語 rauben も同根。bereave（奪い去る→死別する）も同語源で、「大切なものを奪われる」が悲嘆の意味に転じた点が興味深い。
Reavers is the agent form of reave, from Old English reafian, meaning "to rob" or "plunder." It goes back to a Germanic root also seen in English rob and German rauben. The same family also gave bereave, where the idea of "being robbed of something" later became the sense of losing a loved one.
