vermeil の語源・成り立ち Etymology
vermeilは古フランス語vermeil「鮮紅色の」を経て、さらにラテン語vermiculus「小さな虫」にさかのぼる。赤い染料をとる虫の色名が、金色がかった赤みのある装飾銀を指すようになった。vermilionやwormも同根で、色名が物質名へ広がった語。
Vermeil came through Old French vermeil, meaning a bright red color. It goes back to Latin vermiculus, literally "little worm," because red dye was made from small insects. The color name later shifted to a material term for silver with a rich reddish-gold look. Vermeil is related to vermilion, and more distantly to worm.
