解説 Definition

recounts は recount(詳しく話す、物語る)の三人称単数現在形です。出来事や経験を順を追って語るときに使われ、単に短く言うよりも詳しく述べる感じがあります。

Recounts is the third-person singular present form of recount. In this sense, it means that a person, book, or other account describes past events or experiences in detail, often following their sequence.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 recount「出来事を詳しく順に語る」に、三人称単数現在の -s を付けた形です。語末 /t/ の後なので -s は /s/ と発音します。she recounts her trip、the book recounts a year のように、主語が人だけでなく本にもなります。「要点だけ言う」より、経緯をたどって物語る感じを覚えましょう。

Form recounts by adding the third-person singular ending -s to recount. Because the base ends in /t/, the final -s is pronounced /s/. Remember that recounting is more than briefly mentioning something: the speaker or text tells the events in an organized, often chronological way. Useful patterns include she recounts her trip, he recounts childhood stories, and the book recounts the team's first year. A person can recount an experience, but a book, article, or film can also serve as the grammatical subject.

recounts の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古フランス語 reconter(re-「再び」+conter「数える・語る」)から。ラテン語 computare(計算する)が語根。数え直す意味と物語を語る意味の両方がある。関連語:count(数える)、account(説明・口座)。「順を追って並べ直す」が語りにも再集計にも通じる。

Recounts is formed from recount and the third-person singular ending -s. Recount entered English through Old French reconter, built from re- and conter, “to count or relate.” Conter is connected ultimately with Latin computare, “to calculate.” The idea of setting items out in order helped support both senses of recount: narrating events and counting votes again.
