貴族

aristocracy はギリシャ語 aristokratia に由来し、aristos「最上の」+ kratos「力・支配」から成ります。もとは「最良の人々による統治」で、そこから貴族支配や貴族階級の意味へ移りました。aristocrat や aristocratic も同系です。
Aristocracy comes from Greek aristokratia, made from aristos, meaning best, and kratos, meaning power or rule. It first meant rule by the best people. Later it came to refer more specifically to noble rule or to the noble class itself; aristocrat and aristocratic are related words.
