社会的な階級の中でも、特に高い地位と教養を持つ土地所有者の集団を表します。貴族よりは下の地位ですが、相当な影響力と権力を持つ上流階級です。
The gentry are people from a high social class, especially those who traditionally owned land and had local influence. The word is often used in historical or social discussions. It suggests status and respectability, but not necessarily the very highest nobility.
