A gentleman is a man who is polite, respectful, and has good manners. The word can also be used as a formal or slightly old-fashioned way to refer to a man. In modern English, it usually suggests behavior and attitude more than social class.

gentleman は中英語 gentilman で、gentle + man の複合語です。gentle は古フランス語 gentil、さらにラテン語 gentilis「家柄のよい・同族の」に由来します。もとは「良家の男」なので、そこから「礼儀正しい男性」「紳士」の意味へ広がったと納得できます。関連語は gentle, genteel。
Gentleman was formed in Middle English from gentle and man. Gentle came through Old French from Latin gentilis, meaning "of a family or clan," and later "well-born." Because of that, gentleman first meant a man of good family or high social rank, and only later widened to mean a polite, honorable man; gentle and genteel share the same root.
