gantryは中英語gauntreeにさかのぼり、古北フランス語gantier、さらにラテン語canterius「梁・枠・支え」に由来すると考えられます。もとは物を載せる枠組みの語なので、門のような骨組みをもつクレーンを指すのが自然です。古形gauntryも同系です。
Gantry goes back to Middle English gauntree or gauntry, probably from Old Northern French gantier and ultimately from Latin canterius, meaning a frame, support, or beam. The word first referred to a supporting framework for holding things, and later came to name large crane-like structures with a similar frame shape.
