gent
紳士
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
gentleman の末尾を省いた gent で、「紳士・男性」をくだけて短く表します。ladies and gents や an elderly gent のような呼び方で覚えましょう。gentle と同じ歴史的な語族ですが、現代語では gent 単独が必ずしも品格を保証するわけではなく、やや古風な響きもあります。
See gent as the shortened front part of gentleman. It commonly appears in the friendly or slightly old-fashioned phrase ladies and gents, and a speaker may call a polite or well-dressed man a gent. This connection helps preserve the idea of a gentleman, but modern gent can also be a casual word for almost any adult man, so it does not always praise his character. Notice the plural gents as well: in Britain, the gents can mean the men’s toilet.

gent の語源・成り立ち Etymology
gent は gentleman の短縮形です。さらにさかのぼると gentle が古フランス語 gentil、ラテン語 gens / gent-「家柄・氏族」に由来し、「よい生まれの人」が「礼儀ある男性」へ意味発展しました。だから gent は、単なる男ではなく「育ちのよさを感じる紳士」で、genteel や gentle と同根です。
Gent is a shortening of gentleman, recorded as an informal term for a man. Gentleman contains gentle, which came through Old French gentil from Latin gentilis, originally referring to a clan, family, or shared descent. The social meaning developed from a person of recognized birth or rank toward a courteous, respectable man. Gent retains that history but often functions simply as a casual or old-fashioned label.
