Reflect comes from Latin reflectere, formed from re-, “back,” and flectere, “to bend.” Its earliest physical sense concerns something being bent or turned back, as light is returned from a surface. From that image, the verb developed the figurative sense “to show or reveal a quality or condition.” Reflects simply adds the third-person singular present ending -s to reflect.
