Refraining means choosing not to do something. It is often used when someone deliberately avoids an action, comment, or behavior, usually for a reason.

refraining はまず動詞 refrain をまとまりで覚えるとよい。頻出形は refrain from ...ing で、「...するのを控える」という決まった型として頭に入れる。from の後ろに行為が来るので、『その行為から一歩引く』感じで理解すると残りやすい。現在分詞 refraining は『今まさに自制している最中』。avoid が危険や面倒を避ける広い語なのに対し、refrain は言いたい・したい気持ちはあるが抑える響きが強い。名詞の refrain『繰り返し句』もあるので品詞の違いに注意。

refraining は refrain の現在分詞で、古フランス語 refrener、さらにラテン語 refrenare「手綱をかける」に由来します。re-「後ろへ」+ frenum「くつわ」で、行動に手綱をかける感覚から「控える」の意味になりました。関連語は refrain, frenulum です。
Refraining is the present participle of refrain. Refrain came through Old French from Latin refrenare, meaning "to hold back with a bridle," from re- and frenum "bridle." The idea of pulling back a horse came to mean controlling yourself or holding yourself back from an action. A related word is frenulum, which comes from the same Latin root.
