regatta の語源・成り立ち Etymology
regatta はイタリア語、とくにヴェネツィア方言 regata（舟競走）から英語に入った語です。海の都ヴェネツィアの競漕文化をそのまま借りた語で、意味もほぼ変わらず「ボートレース」を指します。関連語はイタリア語 regata、フランス語 régate。
Regatta came into English from Italian, especially Venetian regata, meaning a boat race. The word was borrowed along with the rowing culture of Venice, where such races were important public events. Its meaning changed very little in English and still refers to a boat race or rowing event. A related form is French régate.
