再保険は保険会社が保険金支払いリスクの一部を他の保険会社に移転する契約です。リスク分散と資本効率の向上を通して保険会社の経営安定を図ります。大規模な災害などの巨額損失に備えて財務を守る役割も担います。
Reinsurance is insurance that one insurance company buys from another to reduce its own risk. It is used in the insurance industry when possible losses could be very large. This helps the first company stay financially stable after major claims.

re-は「再び」、insuranceは古フランス語 enseurer を経て、ラテン語 securus「安全な」に通じます。直訳すると「安全をもう一度引き受ける」で、元の保険会社の危険をさらに保険で支える発想です。secure や assure も近縁です。
