reliquary の語源・成り立ち Etymology
reliquary は中世ラテン語 reliquiarium を経て英語に入った語で、もとは reliquiae「遺されたもの・聖遺物」に由来します。さらに奥ではラテン語 relinquere「後に残す」が見え、relic や relinquish と同根。だから「残された聖なる遺物を納める箱」という意味になります。
Reliquary came into English through Medieval Latin reliquiarium. It comes from Latin reliquiae, meaning "things left behind" or "remains," from relinquere, "to leave behind." The idea narrowed from anything left over to holy remains, and then to the container that holds them; related English words include relic and relinquish.
