覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Divide the Chinese name into renmin, “the people,” and bi, “currency,” so renminbi can be remembered as “the people’s currency.” The most useful distinction is between the currency and its unit. Renminbi names China’s currency as a system or asset, as in “the renminbi strengthened,” while yuan is used to count an amount, as in “one hundred yuan.” RMB is a familiar abbreviation, and CNY is the international currency code. In English, renminbi is generally treated as an uncountable currency name rather than pluralized for separate units.

Renminbi is a romanization of Chinese 人民币, pronounced rénmínbì. The expression is composed of 人民, rénmín, “the people,” and 币, bì, “currency” or “money.” The currency was introduced before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and became its official currency. Its common abbreviation is RMB. Yuan is not a competing etymological name but the basic unit in which renminbi values are denominated.
