非ラテン文字のテキスト、特に東アジア言語を、ラテン文字に変換するプロセス。
Romanization is the process of writing the sounds or words of another language with the Roman alphabet. It is commonly used for languages that normally use a different writing system, such as Japanese, Chinese, or Arabic. Different systems of romanization may exist for the same language.

romanization はまず Roman alphabet / roman letters を思い浮かべると覚えやすい語です。動詞 romanize「ローマ字にする」に名詞化の -ation が付いた形で、organize→organization と同じ見方ができます。translation は「翻訳」、transliteration は「文字対応の置き換え」で、romanization は特に非ラテン文字をラテン文字表記に直す場面で使うのがポイント。Japanese romanization, Hepburn romanization のような定番の言い方でまとめて覚えると定着します。

romanization は Roman「ローマの」+ -ize「〜化する」+ -ation「こと」。Roman はラテン語 Romanus に由来し、『ローマ式にすること』からローマ字化の意味がそのまま育ちました。Romanize や Roman numeral も同じ核です。
Romanization is built from Roman + -ize + -ation. Roman comes from Latin Romanus, meaning "of Rome," and the whole word originally meant "the act of making Roman." From that, it developed into the specific modern sense of writing another language in the Roman alphabet; Romanize is the direct related verb.
