Memory Tip
cost ten yuan で「10元する」、pay fifty yuan for the meal で「食事に50元払う」、change dollars into yuan で「ドルを元に替える」と型ごと覚えましょう。
Picture a round coin to connect yuan with its original association with round money. Learn amounts such as "ten yuan" and "fifty yuan," usually without adding an s. Remember that renminbi names the currency, while yuan is the unit used to count amounts.
例文
This notebook costs ten yuan.
I paid fifty yuan for the meal.
She changed her dollars into yuan.
Etymology
The word comes from Chinese yuán, originally referring to something round or a round coin. English borrowed it as the name of a currency unit.
