古フランス語 retrouver（re-「再び」+ trouver「見つける」）に由来し、「再び見つけ出す・取り戻す」が原義。trouver はラテン語 tropare（比喩的に探す）から。関連語: retrieve（原形）、retriever（回収犬）。失ったものを「再発見する」感覚が核にある。
Retrieve came into English from Old French retrouver, meaning to find again or recover, built from re-, “again,” and trouver, “to find.” Its earliest English senses involved recovering or regaining something, and it later developed the technical sense of locating and obtaining stored information. Retrieved is formed by adding the past-tense ending -d to retrieve. Retriever, including the name for a dog trained to bring back game, belongs to the same word family.
