reverberates の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 reverberare(打ち返す)から。re-(再び)+ verberare(打つ)に分解でき、verbera(鞭)が語源。音が壁に「打ち返される」ことから反響の意味に発展した。関連語に reverberation(残響)がある。音の物理的反射が原義。

Reverberates is the third-person singular present form of reverberate. Reverberate comes from Latin reverberāre, “to strike back” or “repel,” built from re-, indicating back or again, and verberāre, “to beat,” from verber, “a lash” or “blow.” The image of sound being struck back from a surface produced the acoustic sense. English later extended this physical image to events whose consequences continue to be felt.
