物質の流動性、粘度、変形特性を研究する学問。液体や固体の流動的性質を物理学的に分析し、材料の力学的性質を理解する分野です。
Rheology is the scientific study of how substances flow or change shape under force. It is often used for liquids, soft solids, and thick materials such as paint, blood, or melted plastic. This is a technical word mainly used in science and engineering.

まず -logy が付くので biology, geology と同じく『学問分野』だと固定する。核は rheo- で、『流れる・変形する物質のふるまい』を見る語として覚えると残りやすい。liquid だけでなく、paint, ketchup, cream, gel, polymer のように、押すと流れ、止めると形を保つ材料を思い浮かべるのが有効。rheological properties, rheology of polymers の形で出やすく、fluid mechanics よりも『粘度や変形特性に寄った材料の流れ学』という位置づけで整理すると混同しにくい。
