金属や物質が水分、塩分、酸などの作用で少しずつ腐食している進行中の状態を表す語。さびたり表面が傷んだりして、材料の強度や機能が低下していく過程を説明するときに使われ、工学や保守点検の文脈でもよく見られる。
Corroding means being slowly damaged or eaten away, usually by a chemical process such as rust or acid. It is most often used for metals and surfaces, but it can also describe something that is gradually weakening in a more general sense.

corroding はラテン語 corrodere「かじってすり減らす」に由来し、cor-/com-「すっかり」+ rodere「かじる」+ -ing で成ります。erode, rodent と同根で、「少しずつ食い荒らす」感覚から「腐食する」になりました。
Corroding comes from Latin corrodere, meaning "to gnaw away," made from com-/cor- "completely" and rodere "to gnaw." The idea first was of something being worn down little by little, as if bitten away. From that image, the word developed into the modern sense of being eaten away by chemical action; related words include erode and rodent.
