thrasher は英語 thresh「打つ・ばたつかせる」に行為者語尾 -er が付いた語で、古英語 þerscan にさかのぼる。鳥名では、藪を激しくかき回すような動きからこの名が付いたとされる。threshing や thresher shark も同根で、“打って散らす”感じが芯にある。
