解説 Definition
ribbon は細長い布や飾りひもを指す「リボン」という意味です。日本語の「リボン」とほぼ同じですが、賞や支援運動を表す記章としてのリボンにも使われます。
A narrow strip of fabric used for tying or decoration, especially on gifts, clothing, or hair. It can also be a ribbon-shaped badge or an award presented in a competition.

Distinguish ribbon from bow: the ribbon is the strip of material, while a bow is the looped shape made by tying it.

ribbonは中英語riban、さらに古フランス語riban／rubanから来た語です。語源自体は不詳ですが、後半はゲルマン系のband「帯」と近いとされ、細長い布の「帯」という形がそのまま意味になったと考えると納得しやすいです。関連語はband, ruban。
Ribbon entered English as Middle English riban, from Old French riban or ruban. The earlier history of the French word is uncertain, so no single deeper derivation can be stated confidently. From its earliest English uses, however, the word referred to a narrow band or strip of material used in dress and decoration. Its meaning later expanded to include ribbon-shaped decorations, military or civic insignia, competition awards, and colored symbols associated with public causes.
