アラビア語 rībās（酸味のある植物）を経て中世ラテン語に入った植物学名。ペルシャ語起源とも言われ、酸っぱい汁を持つ植物を指した。英語 currant（スグリ）の学名 Ribes として定着。語根の「酸味」が、スグリ属の果実の特徴をそのまま表している。
The botanical name Ribes came into Medieval Latin through Arabic rībās, a name applied to a sour-tasting plant, probably borrowed ultimately from Persian. European botanists later transferred the name to the currant and gooseberry genus because of a perceived similarity involving tartness. Ribes subsequently became the established scientific genus name. Its modern botanical reference is therefore narrower and more technical than the older plant names from which it developed.
