取り除く
解説 Definition
ridding は rid(取り除く、解放する)の動名詞・現在分詞です。不要なものや問題を取り除く行為を表し、特に ridding someone or something of 〜 の形で使われます。
Ridding is the act or process of removing something unwanted or freeing a person, place, or system from it. It is commonly used in the pattern “ridding someone or something of” a problem, substance, or other undesirable thing.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 rid は短母音と1つの子音字で終わるため、-ing の前で語末の d を重ね、rid + -ing → ridding と綴ります。rid A of B「AからBを取り除く」を核に、ridding the room of dust のように覚えます。ride の -ing形 riding は d が1つなので、綴りを区別しましょう。発音は /ˈrɪdɪŋ/ で、「リディング」に近い音です。
Connect ridding with the base verb rid, meaning “remove” or “free.” The final d is doubled before -ing: rid plus -ing becomes ridding. Remember the pattern “rid A of B,” which becomes “ridding A of B,” as in ridding a room of dust or ridding a system of errors. Contrast ridding, with double d, with riding, the -ing form of ride. The pronunciation keeps the short vowel and clear /d/ of rid before the -ing ending.

ridding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古ノルド語 ryðja(土地を切り開く、片付ける)が中英語 ridden を経て英語に入った。語根は「障害物を取り除いて道を空ける」意。関連語: rid(除去する)、riddance(厄介払い)。good riddance(せいせいした)という慣用句でもおなじみ。
Ridding is formed from the verb rid plus the suffix -ing. Rid entered English through Middle English ridden and is related to Old Norse ryðja, meaning “to clear land” or “remove obstructions.” The older image is of clearing something away to leave a space free. That sense remains visible in rid someone or something of a problem and in the related noun riddance.
